Becoming an artist

As a child I loved to draw, mostly pop stars and animals, and had an ability to hold colours in my memory, combine and understand them. Being an artist was the only job I ever wanted, although I was discouraged, being from the sort of background where people simply didn’t go to art college. Instead I did and hairdressing and office work. In my early 30’s as a single parent, I decided it was now or never. Working in fine art, illustration, then curating exhibitions, art fairs and teaching classes and courses, I took the job that no one would give me and employed myself. From teaching in the French Alps, demonstrating in London, designing paint colors, to commenting on popular art TV shows on BBC Essex Radio, my career in art took me everywhere. When the pandemic hit, I turned to the online world and found a whole new audience worldwide, with my online courses and YouTube channel. Now from my studio in Suffolk, UK, people all over the world learn to paint and draw with me, and I am grateful and lucky to be able to help so many discover the joy of art.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer is absolutely they can. Of course some people have more aptitude for certain skills and may learn a little quicker, but it’s important to enjoy the process and concentrate on yourself without comparing to others.

That depends on your drawing skill level. I have always maintained that drawing skills are vital to getting good results in any medium. The good news is that anyone can learn to draw, and every improvement you make is a reason to celebrate.

Not at all, my oldest student started at age 87, and enjoyed painting cards and gifts for friends and family in her twilight years.

In my spare time I love to do fitness stuff, including swimming, yoga, tai chi and martial arts. I’m a qualified junior instructor in Kung Fu and teach adults and kids weekly. I adore cats, and animals, being vegetarian/vegan for over 30 years. I love to sew, making most of my own clothes and am a fairly good cook (if you like to eat vegan!) I also love to travel, with friends or with my adult daughter.

I earn money from Google ads on YouTube, but it’s not my main source of income, that would be sales of online Courses, as well as art sales.

Everything I do is approved by cats, even this website! It’s hard to gain the approval of cats because they are fussy, but it’s important to me.
